Presentations in Milan 12-13 Sep 2017 (seminar and keynote)

Hey,

Today in the beautiful city of Milan, I had a seminar at the Politecnico di Milano on the bentonite behaviour modelling, related to THEBES project. The slides are here. Also, the keynote lecture in the IV ECCOMAS YOUNG INVESTIGATOR CONFERENCE – YIC2017 entitled “MPM or FEM / PFEM / SPH /… Insights on the Material Point Method future” is here. In case you need more information or the movies (sorry, no movies in the .pdf), please do not hesitate to contact me! We are always happy to share!

Enjoy!

Paper published and available for download!

The new paper in Computers & Geotechnics:

A study on how to couple thermo-hydro-mechanical behaviour of unsaturated soils: Physical equations, numerical implementation and examples

 is now on-line!

For the paper please follow https://authors.elsevier.com/a/1VXgy,63b~gd8H  to get the free copy (link valid until 30th of September). Afterwards, please contact me for the copy if you need one… The paper is summing up the developments of the coupled Finite Element code for the THEBES project at Aalto.

Thanks for reading!

Intensive course on Geomechanics of Failures

Dr Núria Pinyol, Associate Research Professor at UPC BarcelonaTech is currently a visitor at Aalto, thanks to the support of UPC and the EU Erasmus+Teaching Mobility Grant. It is my great pleasure that in the beginning of September, we are holding an Intensive course on Geomechanics of Failures together at Aalto. Everyone is welcome!

You can register for the course in the Aalto system. In case you are from outside, please let me know at my Aalto University email and I will register you so you can attend the course.

The course will cover three important case studies:

Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral – case study related to settlements calculations and interaction between neighbouring structures

Vajont landslide – case study related to the behaviour of large landslides and slope stability calculations

Barcelona port caisson failure – case study related to the pore pressure build-up due to cyclic loading in undrained conditions.

The lectures are related to Geomechanics of failures by Puzrin et al. 2009  (chapters 1 & 5) and Geomechanics of failures: advanced topics by Alonso et al. 2010  (chapters 2 & 5).

The course page is currently not very up to date, but more information will be given here.

Workshop in Trondheim

International Workshop on Landslides in Sensitive Clays

We have recently been in Trondheim, the truly charming city with Nidaros cathedral, famous for its organs. The reason was the Workshop, where Quoc Anh Tran had a very nice presentation on MPM simulation of sensitivity test.

The research has been very well received. The paper has been published here. Please contact me or Quoc Anh if you have problems accessing the paper…

Thanks!

Wojtek’s research blog – disclaimer

This site is independent from the Aalto University organisation and as such all the materials here are not necessarily supporting Aalto University views and policies. Even though the majority of the posts here are strictly related to my work and as such may link to the Aalto resources, the site may also provide my own opinion and views – those are my own views and not necessarily the Aalto University views. The posts here are also not pre-approved by the Aalto University communication team.

The other reason why the site is made separately from Aalto University is due to the lack of stability in the Aalto ecosystem. Many of the research pages I created when I came to Aalto have been deleted due to the department restructuring and merging. Unfortunately, I have not been given space to migrate them within the new Civil Engineering Department website. It seems that the best way to avoid such an experience in the future is to have a site which is not connected to the Aalto infrastructure and outside of the Aalto decision making system.
