THEBES project: news

This section contains old news of THEBES network, as the website at Aalto address will be retired

Sołowski visited Imperial College on 11th of January and give seminar with overview of THEBES research

The seminar was held between 13 and 15 in Skempton Building and was attended by a fair crowd of Imperial College researchers, including Professors David Potts and Lidija Zdravkovic. The full set of slides from the seminar, due to significant amount of unpublished data are available on request. The short version of the presentation is here.

Annual THEBES seminar held on 21st of June 10.30, in Dipoli

Dr João Mendes from Northumbria University gave a talk entitled “Measurement of soil suction and determination of the air entry value of soils from pore size distribution”. Dr Mendes has extensive expertise related to suction measurements and suction measurement devices. His current research interests are primarily related to the understanding of the hydro-mechanical behaviour of unsaturated soils through laboratory and field experiments. He is also interested in development of eco-friendly construction materials and to the capillary pressure build up in early age concrete.

Sołowski held a seminar on bentonite modelling in Politecnico di Milano, Italy

Sołowski has been invidte to hold a seminar at Politecnico di Milano on bentonite modelling. You can find the slides here.

New publications available!

THEBES has published many papers this year. Among others, the THM framework developed by the project is given here (open access):

Abed AA & Sołowski, WT (2017) How to model coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical behaviour of unsaturated soils: physical equations and examples. Computers & Geotechnics 92: 132–155.

Third THEBES workshop will be held at Design Factory, Otaniemi, on the 8th of November 2017.

The workshop will be held on Wednesday the 8th of November at Otaniemi campus. Apart of the THEBES research, we will have guests from the University of Eastern Finland and Helsinki University who will also participate.Programme now available!

Dr María Victoria Villar from CIEMAT confirmed as keynote lecturer at the second THEBES workshop

The second THEBES workshop has been held at VTT Centre for Nuclear Safety (CNS), Kivimiehentie 3, Otaniemi, Espoo on Friday, the 16th of December.

The research got discussed and we all most enjoyed presentations by Dr Villar. Unfortunately, as those contain unpublished material, we cannot distribute the slides freely. Feel free to contact me in case you are interested and I will see what can be done (note that I may have to ask Dr Villar’s permission to give you the presentations).

New website is life

After almost a year, we are having THEBES website again. The website is now hosted by the Civil Engineering department of Aalto University. The Civil and Environmental Engineering department has been merged into other departments at Aalto. The geomechanics group has been split up into two and merged into the Civil Engineering department early this year.

First THEBES workshop was a success

The first THEBES workshop held on 11th of December at Aalto was a success. The excellent lecture of Prof. Delage is now available here.

Prof. Delage confirmed as keynote lecturer at the first THEBES workshop

The workshop will be held on Friday the 11th of December 2015 at Aalto. The exact program will be presented later. However, we are delighted to note that Prof. Delage from Ecole des Ponts ParisTech, a world leading expert on bentonite and its use in nuclear waste repositories agreed to be the keynote lecturer at the event.

Visit of Dr Klaus-Peter Kröhn

THEBES network was delighted to host Dr Klaus-Peter Kröhn from Gesellschaft für Anlagen- und Reaktorsicherheit (GRS). Dr Kröhn model for humidity transport in bentonite is one of the models being used in modelling of bentonite in the consortium. As such, it was great to have opportunity to discuss our research with Klaus-Peter.

Dr Kröhn also presented his research, with the presentation available for download.

Aalto University THEBES project emploee Auli Kuusela-Lahtinen, alongside Dr Sinnathamby and A.Prof. Sołowski visited Université de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour (UPPA) in Bayonne in the beginning of September. The visit is connected to ongoing research done in THEBES project in collaboration with Prof. Gallipoli and Dr Mendes from UPPA.

Ms Kuusela-Lahtinen and Dr Sinnathamby stayed in Bayonne for few days. During that time they received training regarding planned experiments to be conducted at Aalto related to measuring suction in MX-80 bentonite with filter paper technique. A.Prof. Sołowski stayed in Pau just for a day during which he held the seminar.

THEBES project: new hires [click to expand]

Aalto University warmly welcome Dr Ayman Abed and Ms Auli Kuusela-Lahtinen who are joining THEBES in September. Dr Abed will work on  THMC coupled modelling of bentonite and on implementation of the models into numerical codes. Ms Kuusela-Lahtinen will investigate the water retention behaviour of bentonite to support our modelling efforts.
